At SUEK, as one of the largest producing companies in Russia, we are fully aware of our responsibility to the public and the environment as regards the activities we carry out. For that reason, the company commits itself to using the natural resources efficiently, preventing negative effects on the environment by using the best existing technologies, and designing environmental protection policies in accordance with practices recognized as the best.
SUEK's top priorities concerning environmental sustainability are:
- Planning our capacities in the areas of operation with due attention to their specific ecological characteristics
- Recovering mined mineral deposits and associated components efficiently, using them as raw stock, fuel, and construction materials.
- Preventing excessive losses during coal-mining and processing
- Developing coal conversion and enrichment technologies in order to obtain high-quality, environmentally friendly fuels
- Providing fire safety during the extraction districts mining and the stockpiling of coal and surrounding rock as well as their processing tails
- Recovering coalmine methane as fuel for energy production
- Providing mined land reclamation in accordance with licensing conditions
- Applying up-to-date technologies to stockpiling overburden and surrounding rock at dumping sites that are suitable for biological recultivation, in order to implement research-and-technology environmental protection methods for restoration of soil fertility
- Using mine and quarry water to implement recycling the water supply and drainage systems in order to reduce water pollution due to drainage into water bodies during coal mining operation and use of power generating facilities
- Reducing the quantities of dust and gaseous pollutants escaping during coal- and associated rock-mining, enrichment and stockpiling, as well as power generation and auxiliary operations
- Reducing the quantity of the waste produced by main and auxiliary operations, utilizing it to the furthest possible extent, and making its disposal ecologically safe
- Responding promptly and adequately to emergency situations arising
When moving towards goals, SUEK
- considers environment protection and ecologically safe managment of hazardous facilities at mining and power generating operating units one of its top priorities,
- gives high priority to power and resource conservation and efficient use of natural resources in production activities,
- puts into practice its ecological strategy with the use of the best environment protection technologies, ecological safety management methods, and independent appraisal of ecologically significant decisions by reputable experts,
- provides open access to the ecological information and encourages public participation with local authorities in preparing, discussing, approving and implementing decisions concerning environmental protection,
- pursues a proactive ecological policy aimed at intensifying the dialogue with official environmental agencies and the public.
Currently, SUEK is adopting an ecological management system, designed in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 14001:2004 international standard.
